Throughout the month of February, members of the Ontario PC Caucus ushered in the Year of the Ox with virtual events across the province.

Lunar New Year is an exciting and special time for the Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and many other communities across the province. It is a time to exchange gifts, embrace valuable lessons of the past year and welcome good fortune and success in the year ahead.

Some of the activities and engagement from our caucus members are highlighted below:

The Canadian Association of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine kicked off their Lunar New Year Celebrations with a virtual event that included Premier Doug Ford and York Region members Minister Raymond Cho, MPP Daisy Wai, MPP Billy Pang, MPP Vincent Ke, MPP Logan Kanapathi.

Richmond Hill MPP Daisy Wai hosted a special edition of her weekly virtual event 'Monday Matters' to celebrate with constituents and colleagues. Premier Doug Ford was in attendance and brought New Years’ wishes, speaking alongside several Ministers and MPPs. The Premier thanked the community for stepping up and supporting Ontarians during these challenging times.

Markham – Thornhill MPP Logan Kanapathi hosted his own Chinese New Year celebration with constituents and caucus members. The virtual event was joined by Master Paul Ng, international renowned feng shui master, who read his predictions for 2021 and each birth year. Minister Raymond Cho and MPP Stan Cho co-hosted a Lunar New Year celebration with the Korean community, welcoming constituents and caucus members including Minister Jill Dunlop and MPP Vijay Thanigasalam. Mr. Tae-in Chung, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Toronto, spoke at the event and Premier Ford was also on hand to provide New Years’ greetings.

The following day, Minister Raymond Cho held a second Spring Festival celebration with neighbouring MPP Aris Babikian. Ontario PC Caucus Members, including Scarborough MPP Christina Mitas and Minister of Education Stephen Lecce, joined to celebrate with the Scarborough community and wish them good fortune in the Year of the Ox. Minister Lecce highlighted the changes to the educational curriculum that would better equip our students for success.

In their first ever national celebration, the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto and other organizations across the country partnered to organize a coast-to-coast virtual event. “Celebrating the Year of the Golden Ox Across Canada” aired on Fairchild TV and featured messages from Minister Raymond Cho, MPP Billy Pang, MPP Vincent Ke, MPP Daisy Wai, and MPP Aris Babikian.

On the final Friday in a busy month of celebrations, Markham – Unionville MPP Billy Pang, and his federal counterpart, MP Bob Saroya, held a joint Lantern Festival celebration that included over 200 attendees. The event featured a Dragon dance and welcomed special guests Erin O’Toole, Leader of the Official Opposition in Canada, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford. The Premier spoke about the importance of celebrating our traditions and committed to continuing to support families and local businesses.

The next day, MPP Rod Phillips participated in a second Lantern Festival event, celebrating virtually with the Durham Chinese Culture Centre and Durham Happy Seniors Alliance. Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy also joined the festivities to offer best wishes and blessings for 2021.
