Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) faced a security breach targeting its networks.

According to Canadian Press report, RCMP is “actively managing” the cyberattack.

RCMP Spokesperson Marie-Eve Breton reportedly said that the police has lkaunched a criminal investigation into the incident.

The situation, details of which are yet to be made public, is evolving quickly, RCMP has said while also admitting that a breach of that level is concerning.

However, RCMP reportedly said that the “cyber event” has not had any impact on the operations of the force. RCMP also said that it is not aware of any ipact on Canadians’ safety due to the cyber breach.

RCMP said it will work with Shared Services Canada along with Communications Security Establishment to evaluate the actual magnitude of the cyber incident.

Recent warnings from specialists highlight the increasing risk of cyberattacks on essential services and governmental functions. Last month, Canada's department for international relations suffered a significant cybersecurity incident. The CBC reported that this attack, described as "malicious," compromised sensitive information belonging to the department's employees.

In a recent communication to its workforce, RCMP's chief security officer, Paul L. Brown, highlighted the ongoing management of a cybersecurity incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining alertness among the staff.

Despite the rapid developments, a representative for the RCMP assured, through a statement to CBC News, that the force's operations remain unaffected, with no immediate risk to Canadian citizens' safety and security. The swift response and implemented countermeasures reflect the RCMP's robust capabilities in identifying and safeguarding against such cybersecurity threats.
