The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is cautioning Canadians to remain vigilant against scams perpetrated by fraudsters. As part of Fraud Prevention Month, the CRA emphasizes the importance of recognizing and avoiding fraudulent schemes that target personal and financial information.

Fraudsters often attempt to obtain sensitive information, such as social insurance numbers (SINs), credit card numbers, or bank account details, under false pretenses. They may pressure individuals to act quickly by claiming to offer refunds or benefits or use threatening language to coerce payment for fictitious debts. Some may even direct individuals to fake websites to collect personal information or login credentials. The CRA advises the public to stay informed about common scam tactics and to regularly check the CRA's Scam Alerts webpage for updates on emerging threats.

The CRA also reminds Canadians of its communication protocols to help distinguish between legitimate CRA communications and fraudulent attempts. Authorized CRA employees will always identify themselves and provide a callback number. The CRA does not demand immediate payment through e-transfers, cryptocurrencies, prepaid credit cards, or gift cards, nor do they threaten arrest or deportation. Additionally, the CRA does not leave voicemails containing personal or financial information, nor do they send emails or texts with refund links.

To verify the legitimacy of a CRA communication, individuals are advised to hang up and contact the CRA directly using the official contact information provided on the CRA website.

In addition to warning about scams, the CRA also educates the public about tax schemes, which are plans or arrangements that violate Canadian tax laws. These schemes are often promoted by individuals or businesses promising significant tax reductions or tax-free income. The CRA encourages Canadians to visit their website to learn how to recognize and avoid falling victim to tax schemes.
