In a significant move towards improving Canada's defense and innovation sectors, Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, announced substantial investments at the 15th annual Halifax International Security Forum.

The forum, held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, witnessed the unveiling of multi-million-dollar initiatives aimed at enhancing the security of Canada and its NATO allies, supporting job creation, and fostering economic growth in the region.

Minister Blair revealed a $26.6 million investment over six years to establish the North American Regional office for NATO's Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA) in Halifax by summer 2024.

DIANA aims to connect innovators across the Alliance, providing them with access to resources, grant funding, and pathways to adapt their solutions for defense and security needs.

This initiative is expected to bolster Halifax's robust defense innovation network, which includes Defence Research and Development Canada's Atlantic Research Centre and the marine technology innovation center COVE.

Additionally, the Minister announced the construction of a new training facility at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Halifax, the country's largest military base. The facility, estimated at $188 million, will house advanced training systems for Canadian sailors, preparing them for the incoming fleet of Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) warships.

The EllisDon Corporation of Halifax has been awarded a $7.85 million contract to design the new Combatant Training and Integration Center – Atlantic (CTIC-A).

During his keynote address, Minister Blair highlighted Canada's contributions to global security challenges and announced the appointment of Lieutenant-General Derek Macaulay as the next Deputy Commander of the United Nations Command in Korea.

This marks the second time a Canadian officer has held this position, underscoring Canada's commitment to international security.

These announcements reflect Canada's dedication to strengthening its defense capabilities and its role in the global security landscape. The investments in Halifax not only enhance the city's position as a hub of defense innovation but also contribute to economic development and job creation in the region.
