Global Affairs Canada has announced a temporary reduction of staff at its embassy in Haiti due to the volatile security situation and lack of reliable supplies.

The Canadian government remains committed to supporting Haiti and its people, with the safety and security of Canadians as the top priority, the statement read.

Global Affairs Canada also said that essential embassy personnel will continue their duties from a third country, while the Canadian ambassador will stay in Haiti to engage with stakeholders and support Haitian-led solutions to the crises.

The embassy in Port-au-Prince is temporarily closed to the public, but consular services for Canadians in need of assistance will continue.

Global Affairs Canada recently updated its travel advice for Haiti, urging Canadians to shelter in place or limit movements and stock up on essentials.

There are currently 2,947 Canadians registered in Haiti, with the government responding to 78 inquiries since March 3.

While there are no plans for assisted departures or repatriation flights, the government is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with allies.

This announcement follows the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry and calls from community leaders in Montreal for the Canadian government to intensify its efforts to address the crisis in Haiti.
