Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club celebrated its 25 th Anniversary for the Remarkable Milestone

[Helen Yang, Red Maple Journal, September 3, 2023] – Richmond Hill is home to people from numerous different cultural backgrounds, and one notable aspect of Richmond Hill’s community culture is its multiculturalism, in forms of the vibrant cultural celebrations and festivals all year around.

Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club, a thriving community organization, marked its remarkable 25-year journey with an extravagant celebration at McConaghy Senior Centre on August 5, 2023, brought over 200 people together to commemorate this milestone achievement.

Richmond Hill Hon. MP Majid Jowhari, Hon. MPP Daisy Wai, Mayor David West, Regional Councillor Joe DiPaola, Local Councillors: Karen Cilevitz, Simon Cui and Michael Shui and VIP guests: Michael Perrella VinBon, Vanessa Wang (Singer/Song writer) and Shihan Carl Choo attended the event with appreciation of active programs and activities Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club it has offered to the community. Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti sent his congratulatory video greetings for the good health, well-being and long long happiness to all event participants. 

The evening commenced with a warm welcome from the club president, Ms. Josie Brunetto, who expressed her gratitude to all those involved in making the club active in Richmond Hill over the past years. She said “We could not get to 25 years unless we have been doing something right as a club and with the best Committee and Directors, who are VP Pasquale Fuoco; Carl Choo. Teresa Sera, Vera Ciannifrani, Gina DiCianno, Franca Fuoco, Maria Zepperi, Joe Catalano, Steffano Semerano and Pierino Valante”.

Ms. Josie Brunetto took the opportunity to recognize the valuable contributions from the long-standing club members, who are the backbone of the organization and have played a pivotal role for the long journey. The club’s 25th anniversary reaffirmed for members to reflect on the club's history, accomplishments and the impact it has made on the community over the years. It's also a time to honor and appreciate the dedicated individuals who have contributed their time and efforts to make the club a success.

The celebrating programs were arrayed with fun, entertainment, social dance, banquet dinner and wonderful desserts. As the night concluded, it reflected the strong bonds that the club has fostered among its members and friends through their shared passion for bocce, Italian culture and heritage and social activities. 

Looking forward, Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club is determined to continue making a positive difference in the community to promote inclusivity, multiculturalism, collaboration and living well actively.

Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club, a Non-Profit Organization, was founded in 1998 in the Town of Richmond Hill. It has been supporting the Community of Richmond Hill and its seniors with many programs since 1998.

Goals:
 
· Promote the game of bocce within our community by holding various tournaments.
· Help others through fundraising and volunteer work.
· Promote cultural exchanges with other community clubs by holding dinner dances, summer picnics, and other social events.
· Helping our seniors enjoy life by playing bocce, meeting together under one roof and having bus tours to see our great city.

Objective:
· Help all our seniors in the Town of Richmond Hill, become healthier and alert, all are welcome to join our Club as we are a multicultural and diversified club.
· Develop programs to meet the needs of current and future potential members. Go to onsite seeing tours and trips.
· Treat everyone with respect and to have the same for one another, to build better friendship and to socialize.

As of the 2021 census, 1,546,390 Canadian residents stated they had Italian ancestry, comprising 4.3 percent of Canada's population; Toronto has a large Italian Canadian community, with 30.3 per cent of the ethnic Italians in Canada living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA);  Richmond Hill population is 202.022, and Most Common Ethnic Origins: Italian (8.0%), Iranian (10.1%), Chinese (28.5%)
 
As we know, Canada is home to more than 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent, which makes it one of the largest Italian migration groups in the world. On October 7, 2010, the Legislature of the Province of Ontario passed Bill 103 into law declaring forever the month of June as Italian Heritage month to recognize the important contributions immigrants have made in building Ontario's communities and the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of Italian Canadians throughout the province.  Italian Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember, celebrate and educate future generations about Ontario's rich history.
 
On June 30, 2023, Hon. Leah Taylor Roy, MP for Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill and Hon. David Lametti, who served as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from 2019 to 2023 celebrated Italian Heritage Month and Canada Day along with representatives from Richmond Hill Social & Bocce Club and Italian communities, sharing best wishes and memories for culture heritage appreciation, collaboration and community engagement.
