In a harmonious celebration of music, peace and an inclusive community, the Organizing Committee for the “Ode to Peace” Grand Original Music Concert held a press conference at Richmond Hill Green Park on September 16, 2023, to announce the exciting news: the “Ode to Peace” Grand Original Concert is scheduled to be presented on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 7:30 PM (Eastern Standard Time) , at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, located 5183 Sheppard Ave E, Scarborough, ON M1B 5Z5.
The concert is themed around promoting international peace and world harmony through music, while celebrating Canada 156th anniversary and Richmond Hill 150th Anniversary.
Collaboration and Jointed Efforts: This concert is made possible through the collaboration of 11 community groups as co-hosts, including the East-West International Orchestra, North America Chinese Orchestra, Fengcai Arts Association and Arts Richmond Hill. It is also co-organized by the Toronto Tsinghua Alumni Performing Arts Group, Alumni Performing Arts Troupe, Yangtze River Performing Arts Toronto, Sonar Performing Arts, ENUM INC, Shen Zhen Association of Canada and Shenzhen Charity Foundation Canada.
Funded by the Canadian Federal New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP), this concert showcases multiple original compositions by renowned Chinese-Canadian composer Xiangyu (David) Zhang, a passionate advocate for peace. The performance vividly portrays peaceful and harmonious life in Canada. This grand event will feature approximately 100-150 choral performers, 50 folk instrument players, conductors, and stage crew, all coming together to create a unique musical celebration.
Highlight: "Fantasia of Lake Ontario." During the press conference, the renowned composer Xiangyu (David) Zhang, a member composer of the Canadian Music Centre, shared his artistic journey, passion, and mission to create innovative, high-quality original music dedicated to celebrating significant moments in time. He introduced that the "Ode to Peace" Grand Original Music Concert consisted of two main parts: primary original songs and the grand finale masterpiece, "Fantasia of Lake Ontario," which was completed in just 50 days and unveiled in August 2023.
"Fantasia of Lake Ontario" beautifully portrays the diverse aspects of multicultural communities in Canada, where people enjoy peace and happiness within their harmonious environment. The composition comprises five music suites titled "Morning Scenery" , "Soccer Game", "Persian Dance", "Celebration" , "Carnival" , presented through piano and folk instruments. These suites are designed to take the audience on a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of Canadian culture.
Fusion Showcase: The five music suites of "Fantasia of Lake Ontario" seamlessly combine the wide range, vibrant timbre, crispness, rich variability and incredibly expressive style of the piano, often regarded as the king of Western musical instruments. These characteristics are skillfully blended with various attributes of folk instruments, including bowed strings, plucked strings, wind instruments and percussion. This fusion of Western and Eastern musical elements creates an exotic and creative musical experience that leaves a lasting impression.
Two Internationally renowned Musicians Invited to "Ode to Peace Grand Original Music Concert": Two internationally renowned musicians in both Chinese and Western music, Gaohu Master Chen Guochan and Violinist Daniel Yoo, have been invited to perform as soloists. They will each present highly challenging original concertos composed by Xiangyu (David) Zhang.
Gaohu Master Chen Guochan will perform Xiangyu (David) Zhang's specially created "First Gaohu Concerto." This piece is a melodious composition with profound significance, reflecting the journey of life. The composition was produced in just 10 days and draws inspiration from violin techniques, enriching the artistry of the Gaohu.
Violinist Daniel Yoo will perform Xiangyu (David) Zhang's violin concerto titled 'My Dream.' This composition features a beautiful and enchanting melody with rich expressive techniques. It is a highly technical piece that received unanimous approval from all 25 judges and was awarded a special art prize in the 6th International Music Competition held by Chinese and Russian musicians in 2019.
